BASIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Electrical Engineer will work closely with the SWBS Lead to develop, integrate, and test the completed designs. Assist the Senior Electrical Engineer to analyze and design tasks within schedule and budget. Support the transition to productions and oversee the design of changes agreed upon to the configuration baseline.

Assist the Senior Electrical Engineer with completing scope of work, developing bid and proposal responses that include both the creation of technical and pricing strategies and resulting in the preparation and submission of proposal within the electrical engineering section. Create content for presentations to US Coast Guard (USCG) Customer. Review the work of Electrical Engineers I and II to ensure work quality and compliance. Guide and mentor Electrical Engineers I and II to improve the performance and capabilities of the electrical engineering group. Resolve problems at a detailed level and escalate risks as needed.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meets daily with electrical engineering team to escalate roadblocks to have barriers removed.
  • Develop electrical power generation and power distribution systems for marine applications.
  • Integrate Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber and Intelligence (C5i) systems into vessel.
  • Create and review wiring routing tables with passthrough information, terminate identification, wire type, connector part numbers, label descriptions in MS Access.
  • Produce electrical plant load analysis along with wire sizing and component protection in accordance with ABS standards.
  • Establish functional and acceptance test plans for system designs.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, and terms of the contract including ABS standards within assigned SWBS section.
  • Partners with Weight Manager to monitor and control the weight of the systems to meet design targets.
  • Creator and reviewer of Engineering Change Notifications to formally release design data.
  • Initiates Engineering Change Requests when improvements or errors are identified.
  • System life-cycle activities – including System Requirements Review (SRR), System Design Review (SDR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Detailed/Critical Design Review (DDR/CDR).
  • Develop engineering deliverables in accordance with engineering processes, ensuring safe, fit for purpose engineering deliverables, and presenting material associated with the above life-cycle reviews.
  • Coordinate with sub-contractors and vendors to receive inputs to design activities.
  • Review and check ShipConstructor 3D models and associated 2D drawings/schematics in accordance with company, industry, and project standards.
  • Release drawings following company workflow.
  • Create engineering reports to show compliance with project requirements based on design, test, analysis, and similarity.
  • Partner with quality to troubleshoot installation issues, determine root cause, and recommend solutions.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the department by creating work instructions for best practices as well as mentoring/training junior engineers/designers.
  • Independent worker who contributes to moderately complex analysis and designs.
  • Review peers work for compliance to engineering standards.
  • Gain exposure to leading small teams.

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Experience working in small teams of engineers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Experience with government procurement and contracting, reviewing requirements, and performing specification traces.
  • Four (4) years of marine electrical engineering experience.
  • Required Electrical Engineering Skills:
  1. Electrical System Functional Design – experience developing marine power distribution, lighting, motor controllers, or alarm systems.
  2. Electrical System Analysis – expert in performing electrical engineering analysis, such as electric plant load analysis, short circuit analysis, voltage drop, and breaker coordination studies.
  3. Electrical System Detail Design - experience managing wireway, penetration, cable termination, cable labels, and cable routing database design.
  4. Electrical System Design Requirements – strong understanding of ABS, IEEE, IEC, NEC, CFR, and MILSPEC electrical system requirements.
  5. CAD - AutoCAD
  • Required Professional Skills:
  1. Self-Starter – ability to execute work with limited supervision.
  2. Time Management – managing one’s own time. Ensure that assigned work is completed on schedule.
  3. Judgement and Decision Making – able to evaluate highly complex technical issues in a timely manner before they start and make decisions using a cost/benefit approach.
  4. Communication – effective written and verbal communication. Establish working relationships with other engineers, subcontractors, equipment suppliers, management, and production personnel.
  • Process - Understanding the project management process as defined by the PMI PMBOK.
  • Steel or aluminum shipbuilding, boat building, offshore, or other marine design or fabrication experience.
  • Strong knowledge of computer network system, C5i equipment and electromagnetic interference.
  • Strong knowledge of ShipConstructor and ship modular construction techniques.
  • Experience with cable management software.
  • Experience using Easy Power.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, talk and hear.
  • Ability to lift packages, equipment, etc., up to 20 lbs.
  • Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and onboard boats and ships from the beginning of production through the sea trails. This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete hull structures.
